University Work

Second Year:

Magazine Design:
This particular module was one of the biggest experiences I’ve had throughout University. For the irst as- signemnt, we had to create a magazine cover. As this was the first time we had properly learned InDesign in class (we touched on it at the end of First Year), it was a fun experience. It was very easy for me to grasp as I have had many years of experience using Adobe Photoshop, and I found that they’re both very similar. We learned how to make colour swatches, how to use layers, and also how colour schemes work when it comes to magazine covers and features. It is easily thought that putting a front cover is easy - it is - but there are things to consider like Serif or Sans-Serif, which colour will look better and finding the right sized image to avoid pixelation - and also getting approval to use the photograph.
Along with creating a magazine cover, we had to create a reason why we came up with the idea for it and why we used the colours we did, etc.
I decided to create a beauty magazine mainly for students which will cover budget friendly products and easy and quick makeup tutorials for different occasions.

This was the magazine cover I created:

Public Relations:
The first project for PR consisted of creating an event, which meant we had to contact venues for prices, PA’s for prices to hire out celebrities to attend the event. But the main idea was to think of an event which will attract people to a certain city. As I am from Leeds, I decided to hold a shopping event for students,
by students, at White Rose Shopping Centre. The main concept behind this idea was that students with their own clothing businesses could sell their apparel, they could perform and sing, and also they could shop with getting a discount off all of the shops in the shopping centre. I knew that this was an interesting idea as it would give an opportunity for students to get their brands and talents out there, however there are student events that take place which are similar - but only the discounted shopping. However, I still stuck with this idea as I didn’t know this at the time.
For this project, we had to also create a container, where we had to decorate it to fit the purpose of our events. I chose to create an fashion inspired box, where I covered the box with art pieces, and fashion photography from magazines.

Along with the box, I had created promotional material for the event, including a Facebook page and several leaflets. From this, I found that I was more excited with putting the box together with the images and art, and creating the leaflets and social media.
Which lead me to be the ‘Social Media Rep’ of the second Public Relations assignment.

For the second assignment, we were put into groups to create a presentation for a company called Dean Clough, The Cooking School. We had created our presentation relatively quickly, as we had a big idea already which revolved around the idea of International cuisine. As all of the members of our group were from differ- ent areas of the world, we decided to use that to our advantage. Our idea for The Cooking School and how it can raise more awareness, is to attract more customers by introducing classes to learn how to cook differ- ent food including Indian and Chinese.
As I was the Scoail Media Rep, I had created a Facebook page, a YouTube channel, a Twitter page and also a website too.

Along with these social media accounts, I decided to update the website to build up the hype of the cooking class. To do this, I posted up recipes including an “American Pancakes” recipe along with photographs which I’d taken myself, and I filmed a ‘Behind The Scenes’ video to lead up to the unveiling of the main advert which we had all taken part in.

From this assignment, I have learned to work with others and how to compromise when it comes to working to a certain standard. It wasn’t the matter of who did the most work, but how we did the work together, and how it all fit in together. As I was the Social Media Rep, I understood that my role required a lot of work as social media plays a big part in todays society, and trying to make sure the website, Facebook page and Twitter page were updated constantly was very important. As we had to do a presentation in front of people from The Cooking School, it was very nerve wracking as this was the first presentation I had done
in front of non-lecturers. It was a great experience as it proved to be less daunting as I’d imagined, and the overall presentation went smoother than I thought.

Final Year:

Writing For Magazines:
This module is an exciting module for me, as it allows students to be as creative as they can with their articles. Writing for a magazine has been a career interest of mine, and taking this module I knew that I would learn the different types of features that are in magazines. For this module, the main idea behind the article we create is that we have to write in the style of a certain publication. This allows us to not only be creative, but to learn to adapt our writing skills to show how versatile we are. For this module, I have written articles based on youth culture and fashion “Tattoos & Piercings: The Millennials” and a review of the Leeds Christmas German Market.
My favourite article was The Millennials article as that was the first article I decided to utlise my camera skills. I went out and interviewed several different millennials put together an interview video with sev- eral different artistic added in. Also, I wrote this article in the style of Wonderland magazine, a publica- tion I admire for it’s artistic and unique presentation of monochromatic pictures, bold fonts and simplistic layout.
For the Christmas German Market piece, I interviewed several people who had visited the market during that year, and asked them a series of questions to find the hook of the article. Food. All of the interview- ees had mentioned the food and which food they loved and recommended, so I decided to write mostly about the cuisine that was on offer for visitors. For this piece, I wrote in the style of the Guardian, and I added photographs from when I had visited the market the previous year.
